Marine City, MI

Marine City earned its name honestly. Through the 1800s this St. Clair County river town was one of the busiest shipbuilding towns on the Great Lakes, and the captains, shipwrights, and lumber families who made their money on the St. Clair River put it back into their houses — which is why a town this size holds so much substantial Victorian-era woodwork. Walk the streets near the river and you see it: deep casings, paneled staircases, and interior trim built by people who worked in wood for a living. For a finish carpenter, that's a high bar and a genuine pleasure.

Work here splits cleanly in two. In the historic homes near the water, the job is restoration and matching — original baseboards, door and window casing, crown, wainscoting, and staircase parts that no big-box profile will ever line up with. We template what's there, mill or source material to match, and blend the new into the old so the seam disappears. In the newer homes on the edges of town, it's the opposite problem: builder-grade interiors with nothing to look at. That's where crown molding, wainscoting, coffered ceilings, and built-in shelving add the character the house was never given. Both jobs share one constraint — the river. Homes this close to the water swing through real seasonal humidity, so we acclimate material on site, fasten for movement, and pick finishes that hold up.

Marine City is about eighteen miles from our Chesterfield shop — one of the closest towns in St. Clair County to us, and closer than plenty of the Macomb communities we work in every week.
