Port Huron, MI

Port Huron sits where Lake Huron narrows into the St. Clair River, at the foot of the Blue Water Bridge and at the head of the county it serves as seat. It's one of Michigan's older cities, and the housing shows it: a deep stock of late-1800s and early-1900s homes along Military Street and the streets around downtown and the Black River, including National Register historic districts that hold some of the region's best original millwork. For a finish carpenter, Port Huron is less about inventing character than respecting what a century of it left behind.

Two things define woodwork here. The first is age: the century homes near downtown and the older north-end streets toward the lake carry original casings, baseboards, staircases, and porch detail that deserve matched profiles, not big-box stock — we template the existing trim and blend repairs into the run so the woodwork reads as one continuous piece. The second is water: with Lake Huron, the St. Clair River, and the Black River all shaping the city, homes close to the water live through real seasonal humidity swings. That matters for wood. We acclimate material on site before installation, join and fasten for movement, and choose finishes with the moisture in mind — whether it's a built-in for a room overlooking the lake or new cabinetry in a 1920s kitchen.
