Built-Ins in Macomb Township, MI

For all their square footage, Macomb Township houses are short on built-in storage. The floor plans are generous and open, which is the same thing as saying there are very few walls doing any work.

The great room is where that shows first. A wall-sized entertainment unit built to the room rather than bought as furniture solves the television, the components, the toys and the books at once, and it gives the largest room in the house a focal point it was framed without. We build these to the ceiling height, which in a nine or ten foot room means the top section reads as architecture rather than as a cabinet that stopped early. The home office is the other piece worth planning here, because these subdivisions filled with people who now work from a bedroom — a desk wall with file drawers, upper shelving and a closed section for the printer turns a spare room into an office without a renovation. After that it is window seats in the bay windows these plans nearly all include and nobody uses, benches and cubbies in the back hall, basement bars and built-in bookcases flanking the fireplace where the drywall returns leave two dead alcoves. Everything is measured to the opening rather than fitted with scribe strips.

We measure on site, talk through what has to go in the piece before we design it, and build and finish at our Chesterfield shop. You are welcome to see it on the bench before it is installed.

Macomb Township is a short run west of our Chesterfield shop, so there is no travel premium and scheduling is easy.

Built-Ins questions from Macomb Township homeowners

Can you build around the fireplace in a great room?
That is one of the most common built-in jobs in this housing stock. The drywall returns beside a fireplace leave two alcoves that are the wrong depth for furniture and the right depth for cabinetry, so flanking bookcases with closed storage below use space that is otherwise dead. We build them to the actual alcove, which is rarely the same on both sides, and match the reveal so the pair reads as symmetrical even when the framing is not.
How long does a built-in take?
A single piece such as an office wall or a fireplace flank is typically a few weeks from measure to install, most of which is shop time rather than time in your house. Installation is usually a day or two. Larger multi-room jobs run longer and we give you the schedule in writing with the quote, not after you have committed.
