The staircase in a Macomb Township colonial is usually the first thing you see through the front door and the last thing the builder spent money on. Plain oak rail, square-turned pine balusters, a stock newel and a carpeted tread — repeated across the entire subdivision.
Because it sits in the foyer, upgrading it changes the impression of the house more per dollar than any other single piece of carpentry. The common job here is a full balustrade replacement: heavier box newels in place of the stock turned post, wrought iron balusters or a cleaner square profile in place of the pine, and a substantial handrail properly eased at the transitions. Where the stair is carpeted over builder-grade treads, converting to stained hardwood treads with painted risers is the other half of the change, and in these houses the stringers are usually straight and square enough that it goes cleanly. Two-story foyers give us the extra move: carrying the rail detail along the upper landing so the balustrade reads as one continuous run rather than two disconnected pieces. We also add or rebuild the stair skirt, which builders frequently omit, and finish the underside where an open stair is visible from the great room.
Stair work is measured on site and largely prefabricated at our Chesterfield shop so your only staircase is out of service for as little time as possible. We put the sequence and the schedule in writing before we start.
