What we deal with is the accumulated result: ceilings of nine or ten feet that leave two feet of blank wall above any standard cabinet run, a chimney or boiler stack somewhere inconvenient, walls that are out of plumb, and often a surviving fragment of original millwork that the room should be built around rather than over. Cabinetry taken to the ceiling in a room this tall gives back the storage that older kitchens lost and stops the run from looking marooned, and a glazed upper section keeps it from feeling heavy. Where original woodwork survives — a pantry door, a back stair casing, a piece of picture rail — we match the new cabinetry to its profile and its scale so the room reads as one thing. In the riverfront houses there is a second consideration people rarely raise until we do: the kitchen usually has the worst view in a house whose entire value is the water. Where the layout allows, we build the run so the sink or the working side faces the river rather than a wall.
