Coffered Ceilings in Richmond, MI

Farmhouses of this era typically run eight to nine feet on the ground floor — generous for their time, but not the ten-foot volume that lets a deep coffer cast its shadow line without stealing headroom. Put a full grid into an eight-foot farmhouse parlor and the room reads lower, not grander. What does work, and works beautifully in this housing stock, is exposed or applied beam work. A single spanning beam or a pair running the width of a room adds the weight and the age-appropriate character without eating the height, and it suits a house whose original structure was timber in the first place. In the newer subdivisions on the edges of town the calculation flips entirely — those houses have the nine and ten foot ceilings that carry a proper coffered grid, and we build them there the same way we would anywhere. The other Richmond candidate is a converted or finished attic and second-floor space, where an existing roof pitch gives us collar ties and knee walls to work with and a treatment that follows the structure looks intentional rather than applied.

We measure the ceiling height and the joist direction before recommending anything, because both decide what is actually possible. You get the honest version, including when the answer is that a simpler treatment will look better than the expensive one.
