A walk-in in these houses is typically six by eight or larger, with a ceiling as tall as the bedroom's — which means the top two feet are empty air and the floor is where things end up. Building it out properly means double-hanging where it makes sense, a run of drawers so folded clothes leave the dresser and free up floor space in the bedroom, shoe shelving pitched so pairs are visible rather than stacked, and full-height cabinetry to the ceiling for the things you touch twice a year. Because the rooms are square and newly framed, this work goes in cleanly and quickly compared with older housing. Beyond the primary, the other closet job in this housing stock is the mudroom off the three-car garage — nearly every one of these floor plans has that room, nearly every builder left it as bare drywall with a coat hook, and it is the door the family actually uses.
